It owes its name to the extensive plantations of reeds or reeds (forage plant) that grew on the banks of the Guayadeque ravine and spread throughout the lower part of the valley where the neighborhood is located.

Architecturally, the Church of Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso dates from 1907, built on a primitive hermitage from 1658. There have been three images of the Virgen del Buen Suceso in El Carrizal: the first, that was found on Burrero beach had to be replaced by another because of its small size and because it was somewhat deformed; the second was a head and hands coming from Genoa that were included in a body of a candlestick to dress (this image had to be restored because it was damaged by the moth); and the third was made by José Paz Vélez in 1971 and is in the parish outbuildings.

Another prominent building of the town is the so-called “Casa Huerta del Carrizal“, better known as “Casa del Obispo“, which is one of the oldest traditional houses on the island of Gran Canaria.
